Hotel Tryp in Cayo Coco Cuba is an older, established all-inclusive beach resort with a jaw-dropping beach, fantastic pools and manicured grounds and allows for complete relaxation while enjoying the sun.
Hotel Tryp caters to families, couples and solo travellers and is located in the Ciego de Ávila region of North Cuba along the Cayo Coco Key. The nearest airport is only 12 minutes away, but there is a feeling that this resort is isolated and is located in the middle of the Cuban forest without industry or civilization around for miles.
This All Inclusive holiday resort is located between a natural lagoon and an extensive stretch of beach allowing for animal viewing, snorkelling and diving as well as many other waters sports.
Because the resort is next to the natural lagoon, we recommend that you bring bug spray as in the evening insects will try to feast on you depending on where you are in the resort. Also, if you can avoid a room by the man-made Flamingo Pond you will have less mosquitoes as well as save yourself from smelling the foul water. The birds, however, are nice to look at and photography, but you don't want to sleep next to the pond.
The Hotel Tryp is divided into two areas - the newer section and the Colonial section. The rooms are nearly identical, but the Colonial section is more lush and the architecture is interesting. The newer section seems to have forfeited this by making more modern looking buildings. Each section has their own pools, hot tubs and restaurants and you can visit both freely. Both sections are equally close to the beach and all amenities so it is just a matter of preference.
There are 343 Standard Rooms, 57 Standard Ocean View Rooms, 102 Superior Ocean View Rooms and six full suites making this a pretty large resort but the buildings and amenities are all situated within short walking distances.
There are six dining areas and three main bars throughout the resort offering a wide-variety of food choices. The main buffet area is quiet large, however, food is typical of many Cuban resorts. There are some tasty choices, but overall it is below average compared to other Caribbean islands and resorts. On our visit the dishes were reused and reheated too many times and many of the food stalls were not in operation and the self-serve drinking fountains were mostly not working.
La Loma Azul
Loma Azul gourmet restaurant invites you to discover exquisite Mediterranean cuisine based on fresh ingredients and authentic island flavours. Enjoy a varied menu accompanied by wines and live music. I would reserve this restaurant for romantic dinners and special encounters.
This is the main buffet restaurant with International cuisine show cooking on some days. This buffet area is large and seats about 500 individuals. It has access to the pool and pool views.
This is an Italian-themed restaurant with pasta and pizza, among other dishes. Typical Italian decor adds to its serene atmosphere. The food here is simple and not well prepared and we do not recommend reserving this restaurant.
A varied choice of oriental cuisine in the hotel restaurant area. It also doubles as a snack bar with a welcoming ambience to provide unforgettable experiences. Late night snacks only include one option: Ham & Cheese Sandwiches. If you are hungry late at night, you better love this greasy slice of "Cuba".
La Casita Cubana and BBQ and Grill
A rustic culinary culture can be found in the Casita Cubana. A peculiar ambience in which to enjoy an exquisite meal with typical dishes in purest Cuban style.
This is a very small snack bar for quick meals. This areas typically has live music entertainment.
Hotel Tryp has three pools, two large ones and one smaller children's pool. There are activities such as aqua gym, water polo and water basketball, plus diving classes. There is a varied activities program, shady area, sunbeds, sunshades, relaxing palapas, lifeguard, changing rooms, bar and towels at the Club House The children’s pool is located in the Club Cubamigos area, is 30 cm deep and is perfect for the kids. There is a varied activities program for children and teenagers so they can enjoy a fun-filled holiday.
If you want to keep up with your fitness routine the Fitness Center, located in the annex building with multi sports courts, gym with fitness equipment and weights, hydromassage, sauna and massages, and instructor are at your disposal.
But if you want to get outside and enjoy the tropical sun, Hotel Tryp has one of the most beautiful beaches in the world! The beach is just 50 m from the hotel and is 800 m long with white sand and calm, shallow water; perfect for catamarans, pedal boats and water skiing, sailing, snorkelling, windsurfing and all types of fishing. Beach activities and facilities include beach volleyball, shady areas, sunshades, sunbeds, shower, beach bar, lifeguard and towels at the Club House.
Hotel Tryp also has a Sports Complex where there is a multi sports court and volleyball court, spaces for aerobics, archery, basketball, beach volleyball, free bike rental, tennis court, motorbike rental and horse riding, and other game activities.
If you are into wildlife and birdwatching book the tour called "Birdwatching with Paulino Lopez Delgado". From your hotel lobby you will be picked up in a restored 1955 Chevy Belair driving on the coastal road stopping when ever Paulino would spot a interesting bird and uses his bird calls to make the animals come closer. Later you will walk along a farm area to see more birds and the excursion includes food and drinks. Your guide Paulino will provide details and knowledge about local wildlife and there is a half-day and full-day option.
We decided to leave the resort on a moped we rented from the resort. The bike was in decent shape but had a issues starting. The cost of rental was $10/hr and we opted to take it out towards the lagoons and forested areas. We had no clue as to what direction we were headed or particular destination. The rental guide said "Explore" and so we did. Cuba is notoriously safe and we felt totally comfortable going wherever.
We drove for a few miles and found a sign post that read something about caves and so we entered. Here we found a strange site with steps leading into an underground labyrinth. There were many homemade objects hanging about that reminded us of the Blair Witch movie. We entered the cave areas and were there exploring what we thought was some weird-ass cult chamber when a Cuban local said hello to us. He explained that the cave turns into a nightclub on weekends and on some nights with live-shows, music and dance. We were invited to return at night to see the full spectacle. If you are interested in a unique bar and nightclub - check out La Cueva Del Jabali.
As we had no particular destination we drove around the roadways and saw miles upon miles of forests with no civilization in site and so we returned. The rental guide found that the chock on the moped was not working when we returned and thus why the bike had issues starting.
Another activity we enjoyed was sailing on a catamaran and snorkelling in the beautiful, crystal clear waters. The was an amazing reef with a lot of colorful tropical fish swimming about. The Catamaran was less expensive and less crowded than many other Caribbean offerings making for an enjoyable day out on the water.
Hotel Tryp in Cayo Coco is a very well-laid out beach resort with amazing pools and and even more amazing white-sand beach perfect for those who want to rest and relax or have little ones swim safely. The Hotel Tryp is located away from most activities and excursions so there is limited access to both. The staff are friendly and the hotel is welcoming. Food can be improved upon and this is one area where Cuba, as a destination, overall lacks.
If the beach is your number one priority, this resort will not disappoint.
