Sunscape Splash Montego Bay, Jamaica Review

Updated: Sep 28, 2020

Sunscape Splash in Montego Jamaica is a great family resort with endless fun activities right in the heart of the Caribbean.

The hotel is located on a secluded peninsula in Montego Bay, Jamaica with over 1,800 feet of powdery beach overlooking the Caribbean Sea. The hotel is an older installation, but the grounds, rooms and pools have all been upgraded.

The main attraction, other than soft, white-sand beach, is Pirate's Paradise Waterpark. The waterpark features an amazing lazy river, several pools and hot-tubs and twisty slides to keep cool in the hot Caribbean sun.

The resort caters to families with children and teens of all ages. Sunscape Cove Montego Bay has redefined the meaning of "all-inclusive" with a family-friendly program that features a kid's check-in experience with red carpet stairs, welcome chocolate chip cookies and resort passports for kids.

Reservations are never required for specialty-themed restaurants, bars and lounges. Spacious, clean and inviting accommodations include private terraces, connecting rooms and kid's amenities.

Dining & Drinks

Sunscape Splash Montego Bay has six dining options to choose from including a buffet, three à la carte restaurants, a grill and a café, each offering a unique experience and flair.

The Barefoot Grill offers hotdogs, hamburgers, chips and salsa and other classic favourites in a relaxed atmosphere.

The Coco Cafe is a perfect spot to grab a morning coffee, snack on pastries and deli sandwiches. There is also icecream available here for children and adults alike.

The Gohan is a Pan-Asian restaurant that offers more flair to dishes and drinks while the Portofina Restaurant offers much of the same, but is Italian in nature.

The Seaside Grill was one of our favourites offering delicate fillets of local caught seafood.

The main eatery, however, is the Windows Restaurant which offers a buffet style menu with fantastic views of the Caribbean Ocean.

There are several bars and lounges throughout the resort property that provide easy access to drinks 24/7.

Activities At Sunscape Splash Montego Bay

Besides swimming the refreshing Carribean waves and walking along the white sand beach, the whole family will enjoy the Pirate's Cove Waterpark where a long, winding lazy river stretches around two waterslides, pools, mini-coves and a large reconstruction of a pirate ship.

In total, there are five pools at Sunscape Spash Montego Bay, so you will always find room to either have an exciting time, or just relax swimming about.

There is also some great snorkelling on the inner cove and just outside of the rock area. Bring your snorkelling gear to spot a host of tropical fish. The cove also offers a very shallow and serene place for very young children to splash about without the worry of ocean waves.

The resort also shares property with Sunscape Cove, which is a more quieter hotel. Those at Sunscape Cove can also utilize all the amenities, including the waterpark at Sunscape Spash.

We found that Sunscape Cove offered nothing extraordinary, besides a more secluded room, away from bars, restaurants and pools and we felt the additional costs in staying here did not add any value. In fact, some of the Cove rooms are right beside the waterpark, which does little to their offering. Save the $70 a night upgrade fee for excursions or towards another vacation.

Additional Information

Both of these hotels are just 22 minutes from the Sangster International Airport and downtown Montego Bay making transfers to and from easy and efficient.

There are plenty of excursion options available as you are in the heart of Montego Bay, Jamaica. For example Doctor Cave's Beach is just 12 minutes away and Rose Hall is a scenic 30 minute drive along the coast.

We chose to take a day trip to Mystic Mountain, a Catamaran and Snorkling Adventure, a trip to Margaritaville, a Private Trip to Negril Beach and Negril's coastal caves where we found amazing snorkelling.

I would highly encourage you to get either an organized tour with a bus or private van. You can rent a car in Montego Bay, but driving here is especially difficult. Not only are you driving on the left-hand side, but the Jamaican drivers are especially crazy when it comes to speed, abrupt stops and entering and entering traffic. I would highly caution you not to rent a car and drive it in Jamaica. If you do rent a car, please purchase Travel Insurance.

Prices for this hotel seem to fluctuate from $140 to $220USD per night but occasionally deals can be found. We found it to be one of the most affordable for families in Montego Bay. In fact, the hotel has a great offering:

Kids Stay FREE! Yes, up to to two of your children eat and sleep for free.

There are many negative reviews found online about this resort, but most of them come from individuals who have not done any research or reading. They expected a resort where you can get lit every night and party hard - this resort, as you might expect, is not it. This is a family-oriented resort, with a lot of families with children. They splash, they scream and they enjoy life - as should you!

If you have children they will enjoy this resort as will you if you are young at heart. The twisty waterslides were a blast with our teen boys, especially after mum and dad had a few rum and cokes :)

Staff from front desk to waitresses to life guards are all friendly and helpful.
